Mohawks support lawsuit to block shipment of nuclear equipment

Mohawk First Nations in Canada are supporting a lawsuit that seeks to block the shipment of nuclear equipment along the St. Lawrence River.
Mohawk communities in
Kahnawake,
Tyendinaga and
Akwesasne don't think it will be safe to ship radioactive equipment on the river.
Just last summer, a freighter ran aground near the Kahnawake Reserve.
"We're prepared to do whatever's necessary in the coming months to stop this," Kahnawake Grand Chief Mike Delisle said at a press conference to announce the lawsuit, CBC News reported.
Bruce Power wants to ship 16 large steam generators along the river. The
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved the request but the U.S. government hasn't taken action.
The lawsuit, filed by the
Canadian Environmental Law Association and the
Sierra Club Canada, asks the
Federal Court of Canada to review CNSC's decision.
]The
St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of
New York also opposes the shipment.
